Here are all the details:
On Sunday May 20, 2007 from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. the
Santa Clara Valley ACLU chapter will present its
Don Edwards Civil Liberties Award to Rick Tulsky, the
San Jose Mercury News reporter who spent a good part
of three years researching and writing a 5-part series
on "Tainted Trials, Stolen Justice" in Santa Clara County.
This series has had a dramatic impact on the judicial
process in our county over the last year, with six
defendants seeing convictions overturned or being
released from custody, and has also led to a much
heightened awareness of defendant's rights before and
during prosecution, and in appellate judicial review.
In addition to recognizing Rick Tulsky, and
introducing some of those who convictions were
recently overturned (and their attorneys), we will
hear a presentation from Santa Clara Law School
Professor Kathleen Ridolfi, director of the Northern
California Innocence Network and co-chair of The
Innocence Network, an international collective of
innocence projects assisting prisoners with claims of
wrongful convictions. Her topic is "Wrongful
Convictions: Causes & Reforms."
We cordially invite chapter members and the public to
attend. Admission is $35 ($15 for students, seniors, or low income
individuals). Light refreshments will be served at the reception.
You can download the registration form at:
http://www.acluscv.org/documents/edwards_registration.doc
Your registration and check must be mailed by May 15th.
No tickets will be issued -- Names will be held at the door.
A more complete description of both the award and the event
can be found on our chapter web site at http://www.acluscv.org
The 5-part series and year-later follow-up pieces are
available at http://www.mercurynews.com/taintedtrials
Please forward this message to anyone else who would
