FR: Peter Yessne, Chapter Chair
Season's Greetings! Here is what's happening currently with the Santa Clara
Valley ACLU Chapter:
1. BOARD ELECTIONS were held in conjunction with our annual meeting on
9/29. All vacancies on the board were filled, and we started off the new
year with a full complement of 15 board members from around Santa
Clara county. Newly elected were: SDiane Adams-Bogus (San Jose), Emily
Andrews (San Jose), Gargi Dave (Sunnyvale), Tom McCall (Campbell), and
Marianne Messina (San Jose). Armineh Noravian (Cupertino) was re-elected to
a second term. Nine other board members are continuing in the second year
of their term. About 70 civil liberties activists came out for the meeting
to hear ACLU-NC Executive Director Maya Harris discuss our local and
national challenges.
2. INTERNET FILTERING at 18 San Jose City Library locations is being
encouraged by some members of the San Jose City Council. This policy is
likely to be debated during the first few months of 2008. If you are a
resident of San Jose and are available to speak on this topic at city
council meetings, library commission meetings, or other local venues, please
leave your name and number on our voicemail line (408-327-9357) or email the
SCV chapter at acluscv@hotmail.com to let us know of your availability and
how to reach you.
3. We will be tabling at the 25th Annual HOLIDAY PEACE FAIR to be held this
Saturday, December 1st, from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. at the Immanuel Lutheran
Church, 1710 Moorpark (At Leigh) in San Jose. The event is co-sponsored by
the San Jose Peace Center ant the Women's International League for Peace &
Freedom. Noncommercial and alternative holiday gifts will be available for
purchase from a variety of local peace and social justice groups. Proceeds
are used to support the non-profits, and sales of third world products
directly benefit benefit third world craftspeople. There is musical and
other entertainment as well. $1 entrance.
4. Nominations for the 2008 DON EDWARDS CIVIL LIBERTIES AWARD are in order.
This award is given by our SCV ACLU chapter to a person or organization in
Santa Clara Valley that has demonstrated a commitment to the defense or
extension of civil liberties or civil rights for the Santa Clara Valley
community in 2007. You can read more about the nomination and award process
on our ACLU-SCV web site at www.acluscv.org
5. NOT YET A MEMBER OF THE ACLU? Leave us an address by phone
(408-327-9357) or email (acluscv@hotmail.com) and we'll send you a
membership form. You can join and become a "card-carrying member of the
ACLU" for as little as $20 (or only $5 for students) -- and even better, if
you use our chapter membership application, your local chapter will receive
the entire first year of your membership dues to help fund our programs in
Santa Clara Valley. PLEASE DO IT TODAY!
"IN EVERY GENERATION, PEOPLE OF CONSCIENCE MUST STEP FORWARD TO ENSURE THAT
LIBERTY SURVIVES -- PEOPLE LIKE YOU!" Thanks.
