Dear Friends of the ACLU-SCV:
We are passing along some information from our coalition partner about what you can still do to defeat Proposition 8 and protect the right to same sex marriage -- participate in tabling activity and rallies.
Because of our opposition's lies, ten percent of our base supporters are confused about how to vote on Prop 8, and many of our supporters don't understand the importance of this vote. The next 12 days are our last chance to make sure that voters know that Prop 8 is unnecessary, unfair, and wrong. We need your help to get that message out.
Can you join us? Starting this Saturday and up through November 3, we will be passing out flyers and materials at tablesset up at Caltrain stations, farmers' markets, places of worship, busy thoroughfares like University Avenue and Castro Street, college campuses, and shopping centers. Here's the schedule:
Weekdays: 7-10am, 11am-2pm, 4-7pm (Weekday commute hours are especially crucial)
Weekends: 9am-12pm, 12-3pm, 3-6pm
Please e-mail Jay Lee at jay@noonprop8.com with the following information: your name, phone number, street address and city, e-mail address, and the shifts you can make.
Have friends who are interested? We require that each tabling shift have at least two volunteers, so bring them along! Please forward this e-mail to your friends and LGBT-friendly listservs.
Do you have a card table or other small, portable table to loan/donate to the campaign? Please call Jay at 415-994-2789.
We need material distribution centers. Our volunteers simply cannot drive to our San Jose office every time they are tabling. If you know of any location that: 1) has regular, staffed business hours during the weekdays and preferably weekends, and 2) is willing to store a couple of tables and a couple hundred signs and materials, please e-mail Jay at jay@noonprop8.com.
No on 8 rallies are sprouting up all over the Peninsula and South Bay!
Your energy and passion for this campaign inspire us all!
There are just two things we need you to know.
First, we would like to provide support for the rallies, both logistically and in terms of materials. In order to do that, we need to know the date, time, and location of the rallies and how many people are expected to attend. We want to be able to coordinate everyone's activities, so that everyone knows where and when to go.
To that end, please email Jay Lee at jay@noonprop8.com with the subject heading "No on 8 Rally" if:
a) you are organizing a rally; or
b) you wish to attend a rally.
Second, the campaign's research has shown that rallies, if not done correctly, can harm our chances. There are three things every rally organizer and attendee needs to know:
a) We cannot engage Yes on 8 supporters
b) We cannot rally next to a Yes on 8 rally
c) The campaign must be aware of any communications with the media
I'm sure you've already seen the unfortunate stories on the news about violence allegedly erupting between Yes on 8 and No on 8 supporters, and well-intentioned actions by our supporters that inadvertently give the opposition fodder to attack us.
We want you to be safe.
We want you to be successful.
We want to win!
So please, if you encounter any Yes on 8 supporters or are approached by any media at your rallies, please call our office at (408) 453-4592 as soon as possible.
Please keep up the good fight! With the help of supporters like you, we can WIN!
